Robby Schwartz

Robby Schwartz is a composer, performer, arranger, and teacher currently working in many different genres and styles of music. His diverse interests come from a musical upbringing that consisted of everything from Beethoven to Metheny, Rodgers and Hammerstein to Townshend, and Gloria Estefan to Paul Simon. He began performing in high school as a happy hour piano entertainer, and has since expanded his performance repertoire to include solo piano, musical theater pit orchestras, jazz piano, rock keyboards, and lead and backup vocals. Robby is a multi-instrumentalist whose first instrument is piano, but he can play guitar, bass, and trombone, as well as sing; proving a versatile musician able to fill in many roles. Robby has also composed in a diverse array of musical idioms, from jazz to classical, and is also the primary songwriter of his blues/rock band The Lionfish. While he started playing the piano at age 6, it was his time at Fairfield University that expanded his musical horizons towards composition and arranging. Earning a B.S. studying biology and music, he studied composition, performance, and arranging with Brian Torff, Jamie Finegan, Alan Murchie, and Laura Nash, among others. He lead, composed, and arranged for ensembles including the Fairfield University Jazz Ensemble, The Bensonians (Fairfield’s all-male a cappella group), Praise Project (student music ministry) and the Fairfield University Glee Club. Robby received his Master of Music degree in Studio Composition from the Conservatory at Purchase College, studying with Peter Denenberg, Darryl Tookes, Nicolas Scherzinger, and Adam Pietrykowski. Studying with jazz and classical performance students, as well as highly accomplished studio musicians and engineers, he not only greatly expanded his musical influences and worked with world-class musicians, but also learned through hands-on experience the technical and logistical requirements of self-producing an album. He just released his first solo album, “American Still,” a self-produced, multi-genre EP. Robby has served as the musical director for Fairfield Performing Arts Studio for the past six years. He currently teaches for NYC-based non-profit organization Education Through Music, and works at Firecat Audio in NYC as an engineer, editor, and mixer.
